There are certainly plenty of trees in Minecraft, and thanks to many new updates, various types of wood are available to you. However, for those who love building and being creative, the standard trees might become boring quickly. Therefore, it’s worth exploring custom-built trees, which can give your world an extremely impressive and personal character. You can not only determine the growth direction yourself but also the size, color, and design of your trees. And depending on the project, different types can be implemented. We’ll show you how it’s done!
Variety of Trees in Vanilla Minecraft

Minecraft itself offers a number of trees that you can find throughout the world. Thanks to saplings, you can also grow them yourself and beautify your world (and, of course, gather wood). With these alone, you can already achieve a lot, and most trees have different variations. These sometimes attempt to imitate real tree species, albeit rather primitively.
Trees from the Overworld
- Oak: Can be small or large. They also occur in swamps.
- Dark Oak: Consists of a thick trunk and dense foliage.
- Spruce: Can be both wide (like a fir) or tall and leafless.
- Birch: Only the length of the trunk changes here.
- Jungle: Can grow as a single tree or with a trunk made of four blocks.
- Acacia: Have a flat and wide canopy.
- Azalea: A variation of oak, with colorful petals.
- Mangrove: Has dense foliage and deep roots.
- Cherry: Large trees with pink and bushy foliage.
- Blonde Oak: Similar to dark oak, just paler.
Trees in Other Dimensions
- Giant Nether Mushrooms: Not necessarily trees, but similar. They can be found with both warped fungi and crimson fungi in the Nether. They take on a tree-like form.
- Chorus Plant: The trees of the Nether, even if they don’t look like it.
Potential of Custom-Designed Minecraft Trees
Of course, you can do quite a bit with over ten different types, but unfortunately, there aren’t many variations of the vanilla trees. This can result in your world not appearing diverse or varied enough. Many grow in predetermined patterns that you can only influence to a limited extent.
To set your world apart from others and give it your own character, self-created trees are one of the best options! They immediately draw attention, and you have control over how they should look. Additionally, you can customize each tree individually and integrate it perfectly into your world.
Basic Principles of Custom-Designed Trees
Before we provide you with a detailed guide, let’s first look at the basic elements that belong to every tree. These determine how the tree will look in the end and give you a good guideline. Furthermore, you can apply them to all future trees; our tutorial should serve as a kind of blueprint. We want to focus on a universal guide rather than just providing a template. After all, you should be able to build yourself and apply these basics accordingly. They can be applied to almost any tree!
Purpose and Function: As with any project, you need to think about what you actually want to build. This, of course, applies to self-created trees as well. Where should it stand? In a castle garden or on a mountain? Should the tree even serve as a dwelling? This alone determines many aspects of the future tree, such as its size and structure. You can always adjust this parameter individually.
Type of Tree: The first point directly determines this second aspect, namely the tree itself. You can orient yourself on real trees, where you’ll find enough pictures online as a template. We recommend using photos if you’re unsure. The location is also crucial because not all trees grow everywhere due to climate. However, self-invented trees with a fantasy look are also an option, depending on how you want your world to look in the end.
More Than Just a Tree: An important aspect is to look beyond Minecraft’s natural tree blocks. Don’t just use the basic tree trunks, but also other blocks that match in color. Additionally, you can give branches more depth with things like fences or walls, but more on that in the actual tutorial. In the end, no one will mind as long as the tree looks nice!
Step-by-Step Guide to Building Custom Trees
With the following guide, hopefully, every custom-created tree will succeed! We decided to build a larger oak next to our starter house (Building Ideas for Your First House: Step-by-Step Guide) to better integrate it into nature. But you can also use these steps for your own ideas and follow along.
- Location: As explained in the basic principles, you need to choose a suitable location for the tree. It helps to know the dimensions of the tree in advance and perhaps even mark them out. Those with a good imagination have an advantage here.

- Block Palette: Choose a color palette beforehand from which you want to build the trunk. Use one of the natural tree trunks as a template or another color that better suits your chosen type. We stuck with oak but added other brown blocks.

- Build the Trunk: Start by constructing the tree trunk and branches. Pay attention to a natural shape, with templates helping. Limit yourself to one block at first, before adding details later.

- Add the Canopy: After that, you can add the leaves. Here, too, there is plenty of choice in Minecraft, but you can also integrate other green blocks. Pay attention to a natural distribution of leaves, where they would grow in reality. They primarily grow at the ends of branches and twigs and less directly on the trunk. This is a characteristic that will distinguish your trees from Minecraft trees.

- Detail Work: Once the basics are in place, you can proceed with the detail work. This means adjusting the texture of the trunk, adding roots, and expanding and better designing the leaves. This step can take a lot of time but is very enjoyable and gives your tree the final touch!
Conclusion
If you’re serious about your builds, you should also try creating your own trees. Minecraft’s vanilla trees are cool, but they don’t offer the variety and creativity that you can bring as a player. Rent your own Minecraft server from us and build a stylish forest with custom-designed trees together with your friends! It looks much better than just using saplings and bone meal.
