In Hytale, you’ll use a variety of workbenches to craft items. That can be confusing at first—you need a clear overview of what you can make and where. Once you’ve set up every bench, you’ll be well prepared for your Hytale adventure. Workbenches may change during Early Access, but we’ll look at what’s currently possible and what makes each bench unique.

Hytale Workbenches: Getting Started and Crafting Tips

Hytale workbenches crafting tips in the workbench

Start by crafting a Workbench in your inventory—from there, a separate tab lets you select other workbenches. The Workbench itself handles all tools, like pickaxes and axes. There’s also a final section for general items and, most importantly, your backpack upgrade.

Every workbench also shares these traits:

  • Items can be pulled from nearby chests, which streamlines crafting. The radius was increased with Update 1, so you can use chests farther away. There can still be issues with chest prioritization.
  • Most workbenches follow a tier system—you can upgrade them to unlock more recipes. However, not all tiers are available yet.
  • Use the Recycler to break old tools down into their components.

In the next section, we’ll go through every station in detail, grouped into their natural pairs. This makes it easier to orient yourself and use them separately, since they often require similar materials.

Smelting ores and tanning leather: Furnace and Tanning Rack

Hytale smelt ores and tan leather with the Furnace and Tanning Rack

These two stations are operated manually, but they convert what you find into other useful materials. The Furnace turns ores into bars, and the Tanning Rack dries hides into leather. It can be worth building two or three of each to process more in parallel.

  • Furnace: Smelt your found ores, from copper to adamantite. For fuel, you can burn anything you find in nature, like fibers, sticks, or logs. This produces charcoal, which you can also use as fuel. Hover your mouse over the empty slot to see valid materials. You can upgrade the Furnace to smelt faster and handle more ore at once.
  • Tanning Rack: Leather is a key resource you obtain from animals. Use the rack to dry hides into leather. This bench also has an upgrade so leather dries faster. You must add hides manually.

Crafting weapons and armor: Weaponsmith and Armorsmith

Hytale craft weapons and armor at the Weaponsmith and Armorsmith

Combat is a core part of Hytale, and you should be ready for it. Gear up with the best weapons and armor before heading out. Use different weapon types to your advantage and find what fits your style.

  • Weaponsmith: As the name suggests, you can craft new weapons from higher-tier ores here. Weapons are organized into separate tabs, letting you define your combat style and try different options. You’ll find swords, axes, maces, daggers, and bows. Currently, the Weaponsmith can be upgraded to Tier 3.
  • Armorsmith: The right armor is essential to protect yourself. Crafting works similarly to weapons, and you’ll need a lot of bars and leather to make armor pieces. You can also craft shields here.

Cooking and farming: Food, saplings, and animal supplies

Hytale cooking and farming: agriculture and cooking station

In Hytale, you can farm and turn your harvest into tasty dishes. Farming is already well fleshed out, while cooking is still limited for now. Both benches are still worth your time.

  • Farmer’s Workbench: This is currently the most complex station in your arsenal. Progress through various crops up to Tier 10 to unlock new planting options. You can get tree saplings, cover your animal supplies, craft natural blocks, and work with life essence. Farming is great fun and provides the ingredients you’ll cook with.
  • Cooking Station: There’s not much to cook yet, but you should still do it. Cooked items restore more health and speed up your regeneration. You can also process animal products like eggs and milk. There are no upgrades yet.

Blocks and decoration: Building, furniture, and variations

Hytale blocks and decoration: variations and furniture

When it comes to building, Hytale already offers a lot if you look at these two workbenches. You can convert almost any block into other variants to build awesome homes. There are also furniture and decorations to make your base cozy.

  • Craftsman Workbench: Place a block in the slot to see which variations you can make. From slabs and stairs to fences, roof shingles, and decor, there’s plenty to explore.
  • Furniture Workbench: This bench is already robust and lets you craft various decorations. Make different chests, beds, light sources, wool and clay, plus seasonal decor. Expect even more options in future updates.

Magic and potions: Alchemy and the arcane

Hytale magic and potions: alchemy and arcanist

You can only craft these last two benches after upgrading the regular Workbench to Tier 2. You’ll also need rarer items. They unlock the magical side of Hytale and enable some exciting possibilities.

  • Alchemist Workbench: You’ve probably found potions in dungeons, but here you can craft them yourself. You can also brew potions that temporarily transform you into animals. Finally, you can craft bombs here.
  • Arcanist Workbench: Craft portals for teleportation. You can also open portals to other worlds that showcase the upcoming World Generation V2. Wands and other magical features are currently still in development.

Conclusion: How to expand your progress in Hytale

Hytale leans on different workbenches to drive your progression. Use them to explore different facets of the game. Focus on combat or dive into farming—Hytale gives you plenty of freedom to tailor your gameplay. Keep an eye on upgrades to unlock new recipes.
