Since Hytale has only been out for a short time, there are naturally many features that aren’t known yet or are only known to a few players. Some of them also aren’t immediately obvious, which makes them even harder to discover. We’ve found some of these features for you and summarized them here. If you’re still looking for beginner tips, we’ve got the right post for you as well (Hytale Beginner Tips: 8 Tricks for Your Perfect Start) . Keep in mind that Hytale is still in active development and a lot of information will likely change.

Hytale tip: Show block outlines for precise building

Hytale show block outline with Block Placement Preview set to All

A really helpful trick for anyone who loves building. In the settings, search for “Block Placement Preview” and set it to “All” to always see the outline of the block in your hand. Give this setting a try to see if you prefer it. Of course, you can switch it back if you don’t. We think it’s a huge help for building and makes placing blocks easier.

Place food in Hytale: Set down food items for decoration

If you enable this setting, you’ll probably also notice an outline when you’re holding food. That’s not by accident—you can place food items, too. To do so, crouch and click the spot where you want to place the food. Later, you can pick the food back up and put it in your bag. This is great for setting up an authentic kitchen.

Hytale Builder’s Workbench: Hidden options and material variants

In the Builder’s Workbench, you can convert materials into other decorative options like slabs, stairs, ornaments, or pillars. But this workbench hides a few functions that aren’t obvious at first glance.

Take cobblestone as an example, which you get when you mine stone. You can turn it back into regular stone. Unlike Minecraft, you don’t use a furnace—this happens right in the Builder’s Workbench. When you place cobblestone in the slot, you can switch between different versions in that same field. This isn’t immediately apparent, since you’re likely focused on the field to the right. You can also swap back and forth between variants, for example with wood.

Hytale shovel: Dig dirt faster and level terrain

Hytale iron shovel for faster removal of multiple dirt blocks

Since you can currently craft a shovel only from iron, some players may have missed it. But you should definitely make one if you want to clear dirt efficiently. The shovel lets you mine multiple blocks at once. Don’t miss this feature if you plan to dig out a large hill or flatten an area. Later, you can convert dirt into grass with fibers at the Farmer’s Workbench, even though it’s already been announced that grass will grow naturally in a later update.

Hytale loot: Smash crates and barrels for valuable items

Hytale smash crates and barrels in ruins for loot like hides and salt

In camps, abandoned ruins, and other points of interest, you’ve probably noticed crates and barrels tucked away in corners. They look purely decorative, but they aren’t. Smash them with your sword and you’ll find some great goodies inside.

Alongside apples and berries, you’ll also find more important items you should definitely take with you. Hides are plentiful in these containers, and salt is stored there as well. To stock up, loot every chest and every barrel you can find.

Hytale salt blocks: How to get them via fish traps

Hytale obtain salt blocks from fish traps and process them at the cooking station

Speaking of salt, you’ve probably noticed the recipe at the Cooking Station for converting one salt block into 5 salt. But where do you get salt blocks? You likely haven’t come across this item on your travels. Right now, you can only get salt blocks from fish traps.

Place a fish trap crafted at the Farmer’s Workbench in deep water and wait about a day for a catch. With fish bait, you have a higher chance of catching fish. You’ll receive salt blocks at roughly a 27 % chance per catch. You can then convert one block into five salt to make tasty popcorn or a Caesar Salad.

Hytale biomes: More variety beyond the main island

Hytale map with zones and biomes around the main island

You can currently find four different zones in Hytale, which we’ve already covered (Hytale Zones Explained: Biomes, Ores, and Mobs) . But they have an interesting generation pattern that not every player notices.

In general, Hytale has a main island where you spawn first. In the center is Zone 1 with lush green forests. North is Zone 3 and south is Zone 2. Surrounding them are the dark islands of Zone 4. You can, of course, explore beyond that, where biomes start to intermingle. If you’re after more varied biomes, you’ll need to travel far.

Hytale oceans: Ruins, coral reefs, and sunken ships

On your journey, you’ll also come across oceans, which are currently hard to explore because you run out of air. But once you dive beneath the surface, you’ll discover a whole different world. There will likely be better ways to dive later, but even now Hytale’s waters are worth a look. There are ruins, coral reefs, and even sunken ships. At the moment, the ocean is especially good for farming lots of gold.

Farm Hytale mushrooms: Let them spread for tasty skewers

Hytale farm mushrooms by letting them spread on grass for various recipes

Crops like corn aren’t the only things you can farm. Mushrooms also have a hidden mechanic you might recognize from Minecraft. Place a mushroom on grass, and after a while you’ll notice it spreading. That way, you can turn a single mushroom into many and use them for various recipes.

Conclusion: Make the most of Hytale’s hidden features

Since Hytale is still very new, there are lots of hidden features that not every player knows about. Hopefully we’ve been able to introduce a few of these exciting features and help make your life in Hytale a bit easier. But remember that updates can always change things. Hytale is constantly evolving, and plenty of great additions are sure to come.

If you want to stay on top of its steady development, rent one of our Hytale servers and be among the first to try new updates. And you might even be one of the first players to discover new mechanics for yourself!
