Farming is one of the systems in Hytale that’s already quite far along in the current Early Access. With an upgradable workbench, over a dozen different crops, and plenty of other features, it’s absolutely worth taking a closer look at the Farmer’s Workbench and everything it offers. So today we’re diving into farming in Hytale, because there are already many great features you should know about. From the sections of the Farmer’s Workbench to growing techniques and Eternal Seeds, there are lots of details that will likely be expanded in future updates.
Hytale Farmer’s Workbench: Tools, Seeds, and Decorative Blocks

To get started with farming, first build the Farmer’s Workbench. Open the tab for all workbenches at the regular workbench and use 6x logs and 20x plant fibers for the recipe. Place the Farmer’s Workbench anywhere—ideally where it can also detect nearby chests.
The Farmer’s Workbench has six sections with the following functions:
- Tools, animal supplies, and gardening equipment
- Crafting seeds for your fields
- Crafting saplings for new trees
- Converting crops into Essence of Life
- Flower pots
- Decorative blocks like grass, vines, stones, and other natural blocks
Farmer’s Workbench upgrades in Hytale
As you can see, the Farmer’s Workbench is complex and offers many ways to bring green life to Hytale. Like most workbenches, you can upgrade it by meeting the requirements listed on the right. There are ten tiers, significantly more than any other, so you’ll be busy for a while.
The higher you go, the more features you unlock. That’s especially important for more seed varieties, but you’ll also unlock new saplings and tools as you upgrade the workbench.
The upgrades for the first eight tiers include:
- Greater Essence of Life, crafted by combining 100x Essence of Life
- Crops in increasing quantities up to 60x items
- Various wood types in increasing quantities, some harder to find
For the last two tiers, you’ll also need petals from rare plants. Azure, Blood, and Storm Petals are found mainly in other biomes, so you’ll need to travel. You’ll need 300 of each in total.
Planting fields in Hytale: Irrigation, layout, and light

Let’s look at the basics of farming and how to set up and manage fields in Hytale. You’ll recognize a lot from other survival games, but some aspects work differently here.
Keep these tools handy:
- Pickaxe or shovel for shaping your fields
- Hoe, which can later be upgraded
- Water bucket for scooping or from temples
- Watering can
Also gather Essence of Life to craft your first seeds. Collect crops in the overworld—such as grain or corn, which you can find almost anywhere. Then use the essence at the Farmer’s Workbench to craft your first seeds.
Regular dirt can be tilled with the hoe. You can plant seeds immediately. Without two key conditions, however, they’ll grow very slowly. They won’t wither, so if that’s fine with you, you can plant them as-is.
First, tilled soil needs water for faster growth. You have two options:
- Fill the watering can at a water source and water your fields manually.
- Use water holes to automatically irrigate the four directly adjacent tiles.

Note that there’s currently no infinite water source in Hytale. If you scoop water with a bucket, it doesn’t refill. With the watering can, that’s not a problem—you can use a single source indefinitely. We recommend building a well and then watering manually with the can. Wet soil stays moist for a while, so plant promptly.
Second, plants need light to grow. Place torches or other light sources so your crops get plenty of light. You’ll see and hear when they grow to the next stage. Later, you can speed up growth with fertilizer.
Using crops and crafting Essence of Life

Tending fields is a relaxing activity. As you progress through the Farmer’s Workbench tiers, you’ll discover new vegetables and plants. Of course, there’s practical value to it as well.
Use your harvest at the cooking station to craft tasty dishes. This is still rudimentary for now, but cooking will surely get more complex with future updates. Always keep a snack on you to heal. You can trade for additional recipes in the Forgotten Temple using essences.
Harvesting also grants Essence of Life, which you can use to craft new seeds. You can also invest essence into new tools, tree saplings, or potions.
How to get Eternal Seeds in Hytale

To avoid constantly crafting new seeds, there are Eternal Seeds. These stay planted forever and keep regrowing. Each harvest has a 0.5% chance to drop this green seed. With higher Farmer’s Workbench upgrades and your Memories in the Forgotten Temple, you can craft Eternal Seeds. They’re extremely expensive, so expect to work toward them for several hours. It’s worth it to ensure a steady food supply.
Conclusion: Optimize Hytale farming and have fun
Farming in Hytale is already more complex than many other Early Access features and offers hours of gameplay. Grow your crops and use the essences you collect for new seeds or other purposes. The challenge of completing all tiers is definitely there. Features like animal supplies exist but aren’t as developed yet—expect more in upcoming updates.
