Combat is one of the most important aspects of Hytale. It’s how you fend off nasty monsters, hunt animals for resources, and explore deep caves. Even now, Hytale already offers elements that make combat varied and exciting. From different weapon types to varied attacks, you can tailor your attack patterns to your playstyle. You’ll also need solid armor, which is why you should build and upgrade both smithing stations. Here’s everything currently possible in Hytale combat.
Hytale weapon mechanics: attacks, blocking, and special skills

Your first weapon, a curved sword, can be crafted right in your inventory from stones, fibers, and sticks. It’s perfect for learning general attack patterns and getting comfortable. At first, you’ll likely target animals and the occasional skeleton—maybe even those strange creepers at night.
Your weapon can perform multiple actions:
- Right-click: Light attack. With lighter weapons, this cycles through several different slashes.
- Hold right-click: Heavy attack. Varies by weapon, deals more damage but takes time.
- Q: Special attack. After you land several hits with a weapon, this meter charges up. Don’t switch slots or you’ll lose the charge.
- Hold left-click: Block, similar to using a shield, but it doesn’t stop everything (e.g., no magic).
Each weapon has its own behavior, which you should definitely test. You can carry multiple weapons and swap based on your opponent. Just remember that switching weapons discharges the Q attack.
Hytale smithing station upgrade: materials, essences, and tiers

While some weapons can be crafted at the regular workbench, you should build a weapon forge from 2x copper bars, 10x wood, and 5x stone as soon as possible. This gives you access to all currently available weapons in the game. Like other workbenches, you can upgrade it. Upgrading is especially worthwhile if you want truly better weapons—the requirements aren’t exactly easy.
- Tier 1: Available immediately; craft weapons from copper and iron.
- Tier 2: Requires 20x iron bars, 30x light leather, 30x linen scraps, and 15x poison sacs. You can now craft weapons from cobalt and thorium.
- Tier 3: Requires 25x thorium bars, 25x cobalt bars, 20x Fire Essences, 40x Ice Essences, and 100x Void Essences. You can then craft weapons from adamantite (and the not-yet-available mithril).
While bars are usually straightforward to obtain, essences are trickier. Ice essences drop from enemies in the Whisperfrost Frontiers (recognizable by blue eyes), and Fire essences from enemies deep in caves or in the Devastated Lands. Hytale weapon types at a glance: melee and ranged

There are currently six different weapon types in Hytale, and they all feel distinct. Try them out to find what suits you best. In terms of power, there’s a simple progression: Copper is the weakest, followed by iron. Cobalt and thorium are equally strong, while adamantite is the best upgrade right now. Since direct attack stats aren’t shown yet, use this as your best guideline.
You can craft weapons at the smithing station, but also find them. They often drop from enemies or can be found in chests. Found weapons can be solid upgrades but don’t always follow ore progression.
By the way, all weapons can break, like all tools. Repair them regularly or use the Salvager’s Workbench to dismantle them.
Melee weapons
- Dagger: You attack very quickly but deal less damage. The heavy attack is handy—it lunges at enemies and knocks you back, creating distance for a follow-up and keeping you safer.
- Sword: The classic option with a good balance of speed and damage. Holding the mouse performs thrusts. You can also carry a shield for defense.
- Battle Axe: Slightly slower but with more punch. Hold the mouse to perform a leaping overhead strike.
- Mace: Currently the slowest weapon but with the highest damage per hit. Swings sluggishly from left to right, with an especially heavy attack while holding the button.
Ranged weapons
- Bow: Requires arrows as ammunition. Can be drawn and held to deal more damage. The special attack fires three arrows.
- Crossbow: Loads five bolts at once and fires them quickly.
Hytale armor and shields: effective protection in combat

Alongside the weapon forge, you can build an armor forge to protect your character from incoming attacks. It uses the same materials, after which you gain access to copper and iron.
Your armor consists of four pieces: helmet, gloves, chestplate, and greaves. All of them increase your health and often add extra combat-friendly stats. Some armor pieces can also be found or dropped by enemies. You can craft your shields here as well.
Current set effects include:
- Copper: Protection against projectiles and physical damage
- Iron: Better protection against projectiles and physical damage
- Thorium: Additional poison resistance
- Cobalt: Additional special-attack damage
- Adamantite: Additional light-attack damage
Armor forge upgrades: tiers and resources

You can upgrade this forge too—with two additional tiers. These unlock cobalt/thorium and adamantite/mithril (though mithril isn’t available yet).
- Tier 1: Available immediately for armor from copper and iron.
- Tier 2: Requires 20x copper bars, 20x bone fragments, 20x medium leather, and 100x Azure logs. You can now use cobalt and thorium.
- Tier 3: Requires 25x thorium bars, 25x cobalt bars, 40x Shadoweave Scraps, 40x sturdy chitin, and 3x Void Hearts. You can now use adamantite.
You’ll find Azure logs in the blue forests. Shadoweave Scraps drop from Outlanders in cold biomes, while chitin can be found in the bug caves of the desert. Void Hearts are much rarer and drop from Void monsters that come out at night. They most frequently drop from the flying tentacled monsters.
Conclusion: the best weapons for your Hytale combat style
Even now, Hytale’s combat system offers plenty of exciting depth—from distinct weapon types to varied attacks. You can also tailor your armor to how you fight. To unlock every upgrade, you’ll need to travel and gather rare materials.
