In Hytale, you’re not just exploring the world—you can build, too! The system is already quite deep, with lots of different blocks and decorations you can use. A base isn’t just great for storage and all your workbenches; it also lets you set up your first fields and gives you a place to respawn when you die. As you progress and with upcoming updates, you can expand and upgrade it, or move to a new, more scenic location. Today, we’ll walk you through Hytale’s building basics so you can create the perfect first base!

1. Choosing a Hytale base location: tips for the perfect spot

Hytale base location near water and points of interest

First, decide where you want to build your base. There are several factors that make a location good or bad. You can always choose freely, of course, but sometimes it pays to think a bit more strategically.

In general, we recommend starting with a base in Zone 1, where you first spawn. That way you have access to other zones in every direction and are effectively centrally located. Later, you can move to other regions if you prefer the desert or snowy biomes.

We also suggest setting up camp near points of interest. These include cave entrances, existing structures, the Forgotten Temple, or a Kweebec village. Try to build fairly close to water so you can irrigate your fields later or set up fish traps.

You don’t have to start from scratch either—you can take over and renovate one of the many structures in the world. That’s a lot of fun and can be easier for beginners, since you already have shelter and a guideline to follow. For example, you can remodel the spawn temple or find an old mine. Just keep in mind that monsters respawn in some structures—and you probably don’t want uninvited guests!

2. Hytale building materials and textures: how to combine them

Hytale offers a wide variety of resources to build with. Use the Builder’s Workbench to process found materials into other shapes. Not every block can be converted, but you’ll find many different wood types and kinds of stone during your travels! We already have a detailed guide for trees and wood (Hytale Wood Types & Saplings: Locations of All Trees) so you can find all eleven types and use them for your base.

This lets you mix and match materials, colors, and textures to see what works best together. Builds from other players online or a real-world reference can help, too. Or let your creativity run wild and focus on your own ideas. Hytale lends itself especially well to medieval-style builds, but there’s a lot of variety even within that theme.

3. Hytale workbenches and chests: optimize reach

Unlike in Minecraft, Hytale uses different workbenches for crafting. These benches can access nearby chests, so you don’t always need every item in your inventory. That’s why it’s important to plan your base layout accordingly.

Currently, each workbench has a reach of 14 blocks in every horizontal direction, plus 6 blocks up and down. In Early Access this can still be a bit buggy, but it generally works. Make sure all chests and workbenches you want to connect are within this radius.

4. Hytale farming: make room for fields and animals

Lush fields are a core part of Hytale because they support several other gameplay paths, including food, saplings, and natural decor. You should set up at least a small field next to your base to gradually upgrade the Farmer’s Workbench and grow some tasty vegetables. Farming is already quite polished and a lot of fun! You may also be able to corral a few animals to get eggs, wool, or milk. This system isn’t fully refined yet, and animals sometimes wander out of their pens. It will likely be improved and expanded in future updates.

5. Hytale forge: plan an efficient outdoor area

A great detail for your first base is setting up a dedicated forge area. That way, not every workbench sits in your main house, and you can integrate them more naturally into the design. With a 14-block reach to nearby chests, you should still be able to use them without issues.

For example, you can place your furnaces outside and build the Tanner’s Workbench next to them. Neither requires chest access, since you operate these stations manually. The smithing table for weapons and the armor workbench also fit perfectly in such an outdoor area—they don’t really belong in your living room.

6. Hytale lighting: effective light sources for clarity and style

The right lighting puts the finishing touch on your base—and Hytale offers plenty of options beyond simple torches. Check the Furniture Workbench: under the section for “Lighting” you’ll find beautiful decor pieces that also illuminate your base. From atmospheric candles and imposing braziers to bamboo lamps, there are lots of great light sources to choose from. A look at the festive decorations tab reveals even more lamps and string lights!

You can also take lights from structures you find—some are currently only obtainable that way. Explore zones and structures to discover rare light sources. You might find stylish lamps you can’t craft yourself.

Conclusion: Your first Hytale base as a launchpad for adventure

Thanks to its rich materials, Hytale is perfect for creative ideas. In the Builder’s Workbench, you can convert most resources into other blocks, roofs, or fences to give your base a unique look. Exploration pays off as you discover new kinds of stone and wood. Make smart use of your workbenches, too—for example, to set up fields or craft stylish lamps. And remember: future updates will almost certainly bring even more options!
