Hytale has finally seen the light of day after plenty of turbulence! The blend of Minecraft, Terraria, and a dash of Valheim is already winning over players who’ve waited years for this title. We’ve dived in ourselves to see what the game has to offer. Getting started can be tough, and Hytale does some things differently than you might expect. So we’ve pulled together the most important tips and tricks that stood out to us in our first hours and that we want to pass on to you.

Hytale settings: Optimize gameplay, world, and performance

Before you jump into the adventure, take a look at the settings. Hytale generally runs well, but you can probably fine-tune a few things. Enable enemy health bars and increase your FOV.

When you create your world, click the gear icon there as well to access more options. Set the day cycle length and choose whether and how many items drop on death. Select None if you’d rather take it easy and not lose anything.

Farming resources in Hytale: Fibers, sticks, and stones

Hytale gathering resources: fibers, sticks, stones

Once you leave your spawn cave, you’ll find green meadows and dense forests waiting for you. Like any good survival game, it’s about crafting tools and gearing up. In Hytale, that means breaking bushes to get fibers and sticks. You’ll also find loose stones you can pick up.

Then you can craft your first tools in your inventory. Use the axe and pickaxe to harvest wood and stone. Trees actually topple over when you chop out the trunk.

Crafting a workbench in Hytale: The base for better gear

Hytale crafting a workbench and unlocking recipes

In your inventory you can also craft a workbench, which not only gives you access to better gear but also unlocks additional specialized workbenches. We’ll cover these in detail in another post, but keep in mind they’re important for further features. Most of these workbenches can be upgraded as you progress, which unlocks new recipes. Early on, though, that’s not critical until you’ve advanced a bit.

Finding the Forgotten Temple: Unlock memories and upgrades

Hytale Forgotten Temple portal and memories

One of your first goals should be to find the Forgotten Temple. There are often several—look for the one marked on your map nearby. There you’ll find a basement with a golem. Kill it or ignore it and grab the two hidden chests.

Then go through the portal. On the other side you’ll enter a paradise-like area where you can’t break blocks. Head to the statue in the center and activate your Memories there. They let you store memories of monsters and animals. You can unlock up to 48 slots, so keep coming back here to earn new upgrades for some of your workbenches.

Never go hungry again: Find food, cook, and heal in Hytale

Hytale cooking food: berries, meat, healing

In Hytale you thankfully don’t have to manage a hunger bar, but it’s still smart to carry food. You can heal yourself with it if you’re attacked or take fall damage. Red berries are everywhere and give you a small boost. Later you can cook meat from animals—craft the Cooking Set in your inventory. Use sticks, fibers, or logs as fuel to cook it. You’ll also produce charcoal.

Hytale combat tips: Weapons, shields, and special attacks

Hytale combat with sword, shield, and special attack

Monsters and hazards lurk both day and night. Skeletons, wolves, or bears are likely the first enemies you’ll face. A quick intro to combat won’t hurt. Craft a basic sword in your inventory.

Attack is left-click and block is right-click (as shown in the bottom-right). As you keep attacking with a weapon, your special attack on Q charges up. Later you can use other weapon types, each with different specials. You can also find or craft shields later and carry them in your off-hand. Skeletons sometimes drop gear like this.

Movement and inventory: Control tips for Hytale

Hytale controls: movement, first person, third person

Movement and overall controls feel smooth and responsive. You automatically step up one block. Sprinting makes you even faster. Even better, you can jump up to four blocks high. Starting at the third block, your character pulls up to clear the height.

Press V to toggle between third- and first-person, whichever you prefer. And press Y to control your off-hand, switching between a torch and your shield. Several F-keys are also mapped: you can hide your HUD and hand (F8), show info like coordinates and FPS (F7), or take screenshots (F12). You can rebind any keys however you like.

Building a base in Hytale: Bed, chests, and workbenches

Hytale base building: bed, workbenches, chests

After you get comfortable with the basics of Hytale, it’s time to build your first small base. There you can set up your workbenches and craft your first chests to clear out your inventory. Use wood and stone and process them at the build workbench to make your house look nice. But that’s entirely up to you.

Our final tip: craft a bed. You’ll need light leather, which some small animals drop (for example, boars). The bed is your respawn point and also lets you sleep through the night. Later you can craft fancier beds, but the bedroll is enough for now.

Conclusion: Hytale Early Access and tips at a glance

Hytale already has a lot to offer in Early Access, and we’ve only scratched the surface here. There’s so much more—from advanced workbenches to other biomes and higher-tier ores. Keep in mind the game is still in Early Access, and after Riot’s buyback the game lost roughly four years of development time. But developer Simon and his team are working hard to finally make Hytale a reality. We’ll continue covering the release with more tips and tricks.

Hytale also plays great in multiplayer. Rent your own Hytale server from us, and dive into the adventure with your friends. Build together and explore the world of Orbis.
