As in any good survival game, armor is an important stat, and in Enshrouded you’ll especially need to defend yourself against your foes. The game’s systems are surprisingly deep and offer far more than many others in the genre. From countless armor sets and distinct playstyles to a full-fledged transmog system, there are tons of nuances that set this survival title apart. Let’s break down how armor works, how to use it, and how to customize it.
Enshrouded armor guide: stats, looks, and where to find it

Armor in Enshrouded primarily protects you from incoming attacks. At the same time, pieces grant additional buffs and attributes tailored to different combat styles. It’s important to equip gear that fits your build.
You have one slot each for:
- Head
- Torso
- Hands
- Legs
- Feet
Every armor piece also comes with four statistics to watch:
- Level required to equip
- Physical defense
- Magic defense
- Up to four additional properties for your character (not every piece has them)
In the Character menu, you can see all equipped items. In the top right, you also see your combined physical and magic defense. As a rule of thumb: higher is better. There aren’t extra tags like “light” or “heavy” armor.
Getting armor in Enshrouded: crafting, quests, and drops
You can either craft armor yourself or find it in the world. Most crafting recipes are tied to quests in different biomes, which also applies to the materials you’ll need. Sometimes you unlock recipes simply by picking up a specific material. You’ll also need the right NPC depending on which armor you want to make. More on that below when we cover the different playstyles.
You can also find armor pieces in the world. These are often special and unique, so keep an eye out for them. You’ll find them in hidden chests or as drops from enemies you defeat.
Dyeing and transmog in Enshrouded: cosmetic upgrades

There’s more you can do with your gear. To make your outfit truly unique, you can dye your armor. For this you need the Alchemist’s Dyeing Station. You unlock it after you can craft fired bricks. There’s a wide selection of color combinations you can either discover or craft. Some require very specific items to produce the dye you want. Dyed armor pieces are marked with an asterisk in the menu.

The second way to customize your look is the transmog system. This lets you wear powerful gear without committing to its appearance. You essentially equip a visual-only layer over your stats gear. You keep your power while wearing your favorite looks. You can also hide specific pieces, like gloves or hoods. Customize your appearance in the Character menu by pressing R.
Enshrouded armor sets for every playstyle
As mentioned, armor sets are tailored to specific playstyles. You can learn more in our skill points guide (Enshrouded Skill Tree Guide: All Abilities, Builds, and Tips) . Almost every armor comes as a set of five pieces that form a cohesive outfit. You don’t need to wear the full set—there are no set bonuses—but the pieces are themed and focus on synergistic properties.
Also note: there isn’t a single best armor in Enshrouded. The right choice depends on your playstyle and your progression. Every piece has a level requirement, so you can’t immediately equip gear from later areas. Focus on the additional effects and the defense values.
Switch your armor when you reach a new region. Each region offers different sets to pick from. The best sets are usually found, making them rarer and more unique.
Best melee armor in Enshrouded

Melee gear is defined by high defense. You’re up close and need to withstand hits. To craft melee armor, first rescue the Blacksmith and place him in your base. You can then craft armor pieces at his station.
Melee armor traits:
- more Health
- more Stamina
- faster Health regeneration
- more damage for certain attack patterns
- critical damage
- longer Shroud resistance
Best mage armor in Enshrouded

Magic-focused armor is crafted via the Alchemist. If you want to focus on magic, unlock him early and give him a nice spot in your base. Spells are very strong in Enshrouded, and these sets make them even stronger. Defense is lower, but you should be fighting from range anyway.
Mage armor traits:
- more Mana
- faster Mana regeneration
- magical critical hits
- healing
- bonus damage vs magical enemies
- focus on wand and staff
- longer Shroud resistance
Best ranged and ranger armor in Enshrouded

For ranged and ranger gear, you need the Hunter, who can craft the relevant sets. These have the lowest defense overall, but are perfect for attacking from a distance. They also lean heavily on your stamina.
Ranger armor traits:
- more Stamina
- Stamina regeneration
- more thrown-knife damage
- more arrow damage
- critical ranged damage
- stealth attack damage
- longer Shroud resistance
Stylish outfits with no defense for transmog

Finally, there are pieces not meant for combat. These are often more colorful or simply stylish. Some can be crafted, but many are tied to a special quest or event. Keep an eye out—some are time-limited or only available outside the game, for example via Twitch Drops. Certain sets can be crafted only at the Bard, so you’ll need to find him first. These outfits are perfect for transmog: they offer no defense, but often look better than regular armor pieces.
Conclusion: armor tips for Enshrouded
Armor is a complex system in Enshrouded, giving you plenty of ways to personalize your character. Beyond sets built around specific combat styles, you can dye each piece or use the transmog system to hide it. Each region offers several armor options, and the leveling system adds even more variety.
