The world of Embervale isn’t just packed with monsters — it’s also home to a variety of friendly fauna just waiting to be tamed. Raising animals is a fun aspect of Enshrouded that many players overlook. Not only are the animals adorable, they also provide key resources for cooking recipes and other in-game activities. So sooner or later, you should learn about the different animals and decide which ones you want to keep. A barn is a great way to expand your base and make it feel more alive. We’ll look at which animals you can find, how to tame them, and how to breed them later on.
Unlock animal taming in Enshrouded: Farmer quests and bait

You may have already come across a few animals on your journey through Enshrouded, but you can only tame them once you have the right bait. You unlock these bait types after completing various quests with the Farmer. Rescue her from the Ancient Vault and she’ll give you new ways to interact with the flora and fauna of Embervale.
The specific quest for animal taming starts with searching for a goat. There you’ll learn, step by step, how to care for animals and later unlock other bait types to tame new species.
Enshrouded animal taming step by step

Taming animals isn’t hard, but it requires a bit of patience. Different species are scattered across the map, so you’ll need to search for them.
- Select the right bait from the Farmer’s crafting list and make it with the required ingredients. You’ll need to harvest some yourself. See our crops guide: (Enshrouded Farming Guide: Grow Crops, Soils, & Update 7) .
- Find your target animal and equip the bait. Crouch and throw the bait toward the animal.
- When the animal is distracted, sneak up to it. Watch for the ? icon. If it appears, stop and wait for it to disappear.
- Pet the animal to fill its hearts. Some animals have more hearts than others.
- Repeat until all hearts are filled.
- Put the animal into your inventory, then take it home to your barn.
Enshrouded animals: Locations, products, and drops

You’re likely wondering which animals exist in the game. You’ll find both familiar and fantastical creatures in Enshrouded that you can tame and harvest products from. Some products come directly from tamed animals; others require hunting animals for meat, hides, and bones.
Most products (meat, milk, eggs) are used in cooking recipes to gain temporary buffs. Bones are useful for furniture and to craft bone meal. You’ll need leather for armor and feathers for arrows. The new capybara bristles are handy for fishing (Enshrouded Fishing Guide: Bait, Rods, Fish & Locations) and also for armor.

Build a barn in Enshrouded: Happiness, feed, and protection

Once you’ve tamed animals, you need to build them shelter. Don’t leave animals in your base without enough infrastructure — they won’t produce anything and they can’t breed. Animals need three conditions met to thrive. You’ll see their needs as speech bubbles with red icons.
Shelter with a roof: Don’t keep animals under open sky. Give them a retreat with a solid roof to protect them from the elements. They don’t need to stay inside all the time, but they should have the option to retreat.
Bed: The bed must be under a roof and serve as the retreat area. Each animal needs its own basket, which you can craft at the Farmer using twigs, fiber, straw, and wood. There are small and large cushions for different animal sizes.
Food: Just as important is feed. Each species has its own feed bowl, which you craft from wood, nails, and scrap metal. Each animal also has its own feed, similar to the bait you craft at the Farmer. Make sure the feed bowls are always filled.
We also recommend fencing your animals in and protecting them from monsters. Some aggressive enemies will attack animals — something you’ll definitely want to prevent.
Breed animals in Enshrouded and farm products

Tamed animals can also breed. This is useful, since you won’t have to keep crafting new bait, and you can butcher older animals for their resources. All animals, except pets, breed automatically when all conditions are met.
- Needs like roofed shelter, bed, and feed must be fulfilled.
- At least one free bed for a new animal.
- A bit of time and patience.
New baby animals will appear on their own — you don’t need to do anything else. The more free beds you have, the more animals will be produced. Babies remain small until you manually age them up. Walk up to the animal and press E. If you keep them as babies, they’re super cute, but they won’t produce any products.
Conclusion: Breeding, barn building, and buffs in Enshrouded
Animal husbandry is a great pastime in Enshrouded and it’s mechanically useful, too. Whether for tasty cooking recipes, stronger armor, fishing, or furniture: these resources make life in Embervale much easier. Build barns for your animals and take good care of them so they breed. The unique dogs and cats are adorable as well and grant helpful buffs for your explorations.
