In its first months on the market, Hytale has already delivered several major updates with exciting additions. And the team behind it is working day and night on new content. Naturally, that raises the question of where the journey is headed. Hytale has an interesting development history that also hints at what features players can still expect. In particular, Hytale’s creator, Simon Collins-Laflamme, is fully committed and has already secured two more years of development. But there’s much more planned for the game, which will likely take additional time. Let’s take a look at what has already been hinted at or even confirmed.
As of April 2026, four major content updates have been released, and new pre-release builds arrive every week. We combed through various tweets from Simon and old blog posts and compiled a list of upcoming features. This list is not exhaustive, and plans can change, but these items have at least been mentioned. If you have ideas, submit them directly to Hypixel Studios. The community has been voting actively!
Hytale Development 2015 to 2026: Past, Present, and Outlook

To understand Hytale’s future, a quick look at its development history helps. The game was conceived back in 2015 as a kind of counterpart to Minecraft. Hypixel, the studio behind it, ran one of the largest servers for the block-based game at the time.
In 2020, support from Riot Games arrived. They provided funding and acquired Hypixel Studios. The release was originally planned for 2021 but was repeatedly delayed. In July 2025 came the surprise: Hytale was canceled, with overambition cited as a key issue. But in November 2025, Simon bought the game back from Riot Games on the condition that the last four years of development under Riot would be discarded.
The version that launched in January 2026 is therefore a fairly old state of the game. While a lot changed under Riot on the engine side, some game content was also cut. That naturally raises the question of which features and systems still await us—and what the team can improve on this second pass.
Planned Hytale Features and Updates for 2026 and Beyond
Worldgen V2: New world generation with Cubic Chunks

The biggest upcoming update is a complete overhaul of world generation. This is currently referred to as Worldgen V2 and is set to give the world a fresh look. There’s no release window yet, and it’s unclear whether old maps will be compatible. The current zones and biomes are essentially prototypes of what’s to come.
The team is also planning to change the world’s structure to Cubic Chunks, potentially allowing an infinitely tall world. How and if this will be implemented is still to be determined.
In-game map: fog of war, saving, and markers
The in-game map is slated for changes as well. While new markers and tweaks have already been added, the map currently neither reveals as you explore nor saves what you’ve discovered. That functionality is planned, but it needs more iteration before it ships.
Character customization: hairstyles, outfits, and more save slots
With each update so far, new hairstyles, clothing, and other customization options have arrived—and that’s likely to continue. Look forward to even more ways to personalize your character. There are currently five save slots, and those are expected to be expanded as well.
Enemy variety and boss fights: ramping up the challenge

Enemies are also in focus to make Hytale more challenging. There’s already a diverse roster of enemy classes, but this is set for a broad rework and expansion. An important aspect will be upcoming bosses that may act as progression milestones you need to defeat. A Hardcore mode is also on the table for players seeking an even tougher experience.
Adventure Mode: quests, NPCs, and an MMO feel

When you create a new world, you can currently choose only between two modes: Exploration and Creative. A third option, Adventure Mode, is still grayed out. That’s where a ton of content is planned once Hytale picks up speed.
Adventure Mode is envisioned to have an MMO-like feel—playable in single-player and multiplayer—with a focus on NPCs, quests, and story, while still retaining sandbox elements. There will also be some form of RPG-style progression system, though details are still unknown. According to the team, Adventure Mode is planned to arrive after Early Access.
Traversal in Hytale: boats and gliders

Two practical features are also planned. Boats and gliders already exist in-game, but they don’t have full functionality yet—that’s set to change. Boats rank highly in community votes and will make ocean exploration easier. Gliders are intended for traveling the skies and still need proper implementation. At the moment, a glider technically works but has no animation.
Chapter updates: large content patches with story

Finally, here’s a look at how future updates might be structured. While smaller changes will continue to ship as regular updates, large content drops with story elements are expected to arrive as chapters. The primary focus will be on clear goals for players to pursue. As with Adventure Mode, striking a good balance between sandbox play and storytelling is key. The open question is how much content each mode will receive. For now, the spotlight is squarely on Exploration mode.
Conclusion: Hytale updates in 2026 and the long-term outlook
Many of Hytale’s planned features are not yet in the game or are only in a prototype phase. There’s already plenty to discover, but the future looks extremely promising. Hopefully, upcoming updates will rekindle broader player interest—though even now, Hytale enjoys a small but very active fanbase. Letting the community propose and upvote features is an important step toward deeper player involvement.
